West Papuan freedom leaders in
Vanuatu come together and launch the United Liberation Movement For West Papua
ULMWP
For 5 days, West Papuan
leaders have been meeting in Port Vila in the Republic of Vanuatu a the
personal invitation of the Prime Minister. This was to make a united
international group which pushes for the self-determination and independence of
West Papua, especially within the regional Melanesian Spearhead Group
.
The leaders discussed the unity of West Papuan independence groups and
at the closing of the conference, signed a statement now to be known as the
"Saralana Declaration".
This declaration has confirmed West Papuans desires for freedom and made
a new united group to pursue this desire and fundamental right.
The United Liberation Movement For West Papua
(ULMWP) comprises many West Papuan groups and was made in Vanuatu on 6th
December 2014. 5 leaders were elected to represent the new united organisation
and Free West Papua Campaign founder Benny
Wenda was chosen as the spokesman.
This United Group is an extremely important step on
the road towards a Free West Papua, as with a United Voice the leaders can now
mobilise people together internationally with a shared agenda as one powerful
force.
